Of all unprotected sexual activity, unprotected oral sex has the lowest risk of transmission of HIV.

Most people have no symptoms of HIV for several years, although some people do have flu symptoms within a couple months after getting infected. You would not have symptoms of HIV within only a week after exposure.

Testing: The standard recommendation is to get tested 3 months after possible exposure, then retest at the 6 month mark. More than 98% of people who have HIV test positive within 3 months. In very rare cases, it could take up to 6 months for someone to test positive.

These days, with appropriate treatment, many people who have HIV are able to live healthier, longer. However, there are a lot of factors that determine how successful treatment will be, including how healthy the person was before getting HIV, whether or not they are following treatment recommendations as directed, and how their body is responding to the virus and the medication.

Overall, HIV is no longer considered the death sentence it once was. It is now considered to be a chronic but manageable condition.

When first infected with HIV, you may have no signs or symptoms at all, although it’s more common to develop a brief flu-like illness two to four weeks after becoming infected. Signs and symptoms may include:

    Fever
    Headache
    Sore throat
    Swollen lymph glands
    Rash

But you had unprotected oral sex only a week ago, so I would not worry. Yes, people do still die, but many people live 15-20 years with Aids, using proper medication.

I’m very happy you are going for a test, and be sure to follow-up with another test in 6 months. Don’t put yourself in danger again. Use a condom. Educate yourself on all STD’s …they are out there and you need to be aware. Be smart, stay safe and don’t gamble on your future by a careless mistake.

Try not to worry. I’ll say a little prayer for you…but no more unprotected sex…promise?

Amanda, My partner has been HIV+ for 25 years. So yes people can now live a long time with HIV. In fact an article came across my desk last summer that said if a person tested HIV+ now they can live the normal life expectancy for their family.

Yes people do still die from HIV, the biggest reason is they do not follow the doctors advice.

As far as early symptoms, there really are not any. A few people tell me they thought the had the flu for a long time, and that usually relates to the time of infection.

    You will be fine.

you just might be sick..wrong timing? but i wouldnt rule it out….people dont DIE from HIV..HIV/AIDS weakens the immune system so much, that an average cold can lead to death..its all about staying on the meds, eating healthy and basically staying on top of your health….because if you arent taking good care of yourself, HIV will turn to AIDS and thats when people meet their demise..i hope i helped…
oh yeah, make sure you get another HIV/AIDS test in july..and just to make sure everything is good, get another one a few months after that.
im going to pray for you and i hope i helped

you should check for ghonnorea. There is a theoretical risk (theoretical!!) of hiv transmission through oral sex, but there are no documented cases of it.

But you could get other STD’s because of unprotected oral sex. The first thing that comes to my mind is ghonnorea of the throat. That causes a throat ache. You should test yourself for the possible STD’s.

You should not worry about HIV.

Why in the world do you think you have HIV? If the other partner has it then yes you might have got it also. I jsu tdont understand why everyone does these sexual things and then ask if there pregnant or have a STD…..its so rretarded!

yes people still die of HIV.
no treatment or vaccine so always practice safe sex or abstinance.
no its not due to HIV as it doesnt manifest itself this quickly.
