HEPATITIS C AND HIV
Hepatitis C and HIV are two dreaded diseases today. Both Hepatitis C and HIV are transmitted through blood. Hepatitis C is a liver disease caused by a virus. Hepatitis C and HIV spread easily when drug users share the same equipment. Hepatitis C and HIV both are also spread through sexual activity.
Because both Hepatitis C and HIV are spread by contact with the infected blood it is observed that people are mostly infected with both the deadly viruses. Hepatitis C and HIV together is severe as Hepatitis C makes the disease HIV worsen over a period of time. This happens because Hepatitis C causes liver damage. People who are infected with Hepatitis C and HIV seem to be a depressed lot as the medications are quite strong.

For people infected with HIV, Hepatitis can be more serious and can cause serious liver damage or liver failure. It is a real complication to treat Hepatitis C and HIV together because sometimes you do not know which of these diseases should be treated first. Many more people are infected with Hepatitis C but they are not aware of it, because Hepatitis C can go on for years and it damages the liver very slowly. So people who are infected with HIV should go for a Hepatitis C test. Therefore people who are infected with both Hepatitis C and HIV should find a health provider who recognizes both these ailments and can provide rightful treatment to both HIV and Hepatitis C.
Both Hepatitis C and HIV are known to be blood borne diseases i.e. Hepatitis C and HIV is present in semen, vaginal fluid and breast milk respectively. Breast feeding transmits the both Hepatitis C and HIV but the risk of Hepatitis C is comparatively low. HIV is a fragile virus outside the body whereas Hepatitis C is a tougher virus outside the body. HIV virus dies quickly outside the body while HCV can live for days outside the human body. People can live with Hepatitis C and HIV for many years without symptoms of Hepatitis C and HIV. In both Hepatitis C and HIV levels of the virus can be eradicated or suppressed. In case of HIV it can be suppressed and in the case of Hepatitis C it can be eradicated successfully after suitable treatment.
There is specific treatment for both Hepatitis C and HIV. There are more than 20 drugs available for HIV that specifically targeted The HIV virus. In case of Hepatitis C the standard of care combination therapy with pegylated interferon plus ribavirin. But don’t lose hope, as there is a lot of research and development going on in the field of science and medicine to cure both Hepatitis C and HIV. Since both Hepatitis C and HIV are quite complicated special care should be given to patients suffering from both Hepatitis C and HIV. If both Hepatitis C and HIV, are detected early, there is treatment to control and curb this deadly virus.
